We have to teach this generation that reading is not a chore but instead a privilege.
Standards in education have been raised as we implement the Common Core Standards and many are feeling uneasy. What used to be considered proficient in many states, may as well be considered below standard now. If our children are going to be ready to fulfill the 21st century demands, they will need to vastly improve their reading and writing skills as well as habits.
Reading is a definite boredom buster because it engages and challenges the mind. I can't tell you how many times I've heard or read on social media the words "I'm bored". I always respond with, "Read a book!". This is because I know that the more one reads, concentration, focus, memory, creativity and vocabulary improve. As if this isn't enough to convince you that every child should have a book in their hands, then maybe knowing reading increases self esteem will. Frequent readers gain more knowledge and thus increase their confidence. Our next generation will step up and meet the expectations we set. Let's teach them to shoot for the moon and if they miss at least they'll land among the stars.
Reading is rewarding and priceless!
