Some of our best and most productive moments arise from a period when we are silent and reflective.
A song entitled, "Turn Down For What?" came on and this must have been her anthem because she somehow found a way to take the madness up a notch. I turned to my husband and said, "Turn down for what? Because it's not all about her!" This moment was the inspiration for this post and a motivational speech I penned. The following bullets highlight reasons to "Turn Down".
- It's a Noise Violation
There are circumstances that impel us to lower our voice and this adherence allows others the ability to concentrate and reflect. Everyone knows to be quiet in the library, during a test or at a funeral. Don't stop there! Before trying to be the loudest or funniest, ask if your noise is violating the rights of others to enjoy that same moment.
- It's Not All About You
Although being hyped up may be fun for you, your behavior can be annoying and distracting to those around you. Have you ever been in a meeting or class where one person decides to dominate and derails the whole lesson? Everyone, except the egomaniac, feels they wasted their time and didn't gain anything. You shine brightest when you are part of a team and dullest when you try to outshine them.
- To Listen To That All Important Voice In Your Head
It is not uncommon to have thoughts racing through your head. But when one thought pushes another out the way, before completion or analyzing, that's troublesome. Moments of reflection and contemplation afford us the opportunity to weigh our options, plan a course and control our impulses. Without such check and balances, we make rash decisions that can have irreversible consequences. Pause and get to know your inner compass.
- So You Can Turn Up For Real
Years ago I read the following on a Snapple lid, "If all days were good days, there would be no good days". In the same if you are always high strung and hyped, others will become ambivalent to you. Your presence is therefore diminished and negated. Evaluate each circumstance and deliver the appropriate amount of energy. Don't short circuit, what could be your powerful moment.
Please Turn Down Sometimes!
